About Josh
Trauma-Informed Psychotherapist Integrating Somatic, Experiential, and Contemplative Approaches
Josh Sasai is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW), psychotherapist, educator, and trainer with more than twenty-five years of experience supporting people through emotional, psychological, and life challenges. He is a registered Medicare provider and offers trauma-informed counselling and psychotherapy for adults.
Josh's approach integrates evidence-based trauma therapies, mindfulness, and body–mind-oriented psychotherapy within a compassionate and collaborative therapeutic relationship. Depending on each person's needs, therapy may incorporate approaches such as EMDR, Brainspotting, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), and other experiential and somatic methods. His work is grounded in a compassionate, collaborative therapeutic relationship and informed by an understanding that healing often involves both emotional insight and direct embodied experience.
Originally from Kyoto, Japan, Josh grew up with influences from mindfulness and Buddhist psychology and later became familiar with Japanese psychotherapeutic traditions such as Morita Therapy and Naikan Therapy. Josh draws upon Buddhist Psychotherapy as a compassionate and contemplative framework that emphasises awareness, emotional integration, and the connection between mind and body. Within this framework, he integrates evidence-based therapeutic approaches tailored to each client's unique needs and circumstances. These contemplative traditions continue to inform his approach alongside contemporary Western psychotherapy and trauma treatment methods.
Having lived in Japan, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia, Josh values cultural diversity and enjoys working with people from a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences. He has a particular interest in trauma, attachment, emotional processing, mind–body integration, identity, grief, and life transitions.
Josh strives to provide a safe, respectful, and non-judgemental space where clients can explore their experiences, reconnect with themselves, and move towards meaningful and lasting change.
Josh looks forward to meeting you.
